Public adjusters: When and why you might hire one

It is fairly common to hear homeowners and other policy holders complain about their insurance companies. Many times, the displeasure lies on the slow processing of their claims. Sometimes, the disappointment is on the amount with which the insurance company is willing to settle the claim. Perhaps the settlement amount is inadequate to cover the actual costs of repair or restoration of a home in case there was a disaster.

As a matter of practice, the insurance firm assigns an adjuster to handle the claims of a policy holder at no cost to the latter. However, many homeowners would not want to experience the same problems with the insurance adjuster so they would rather engage the services of a public adjuster to help them with their claims.

The role of a public adjuster

The National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA) identifies public adjusters as experts on property loss adjustment. They are retained by policy holders in order to provide assistance in the preparation, filing and adjustment of insurance claims.

You can rely on a public adjuster to provide assistance when you must collect from your home insurance in case you suffer a loss at your business or home because of theft, explosion, fire, water damage, collapse and other like incidents.

Policy holders prefer to hire a public adjuster especially when they need to file a huge amount in claims settlement. The process of filing a claim can be long and difficult and policy holders can truly benefit from being represented by the public adjuster until they are able to collect the settlement.

Do remember that the staff adjuster is under the payroll of the insurance company so you can expect that his evaluation and decision will always favor the insurer. On the other hand, you can be assured that the public adjuster will be looking out for your interest.

A good example would be claiming on fire damages. Seeing your house on fire or coming home to find your house burned down to ashes can be a harrowing experience that it would be best to entrust the handling of insurance details to another person who is capable yet concerned about your welfare.  This is the role of a public adjuster

The public adjuster will be of much help in the review of your insurance policy to determine which coverage would be applicable to your claim. He can inspect the site of the fire, evaluate the damages and losses you have incurred, and determine the values you may claim.

The public adjuster can assist you in the compilation of all supporting documents and other evidentiary requirements, and negotiate with the insurance company in your behalf.

Should you hire a public claims adjuster?

The fee of a public adjuster is usually computed as a percentage of the settlement amount. That is why he would see to it that you will receive the maximum allowable amount for your claims. Then again, you may want to see if it is worth hiring one. There are a few important things you must consider.

1. Read and understand your insurance policy and know the terms and conditions.

2. It may not be practical to get your own public adjuster if you’re expecting a settlement amount below $25,000 or if you are claiming against your car insurance.

3. It is important to confer with your insurance provider to assess if he is being fair and quick in the processing of your claim.

4. A good indicator of a reliable insurance company is their immediate presence on the site of the incident.

When to hire your own public adjuster

It is definitely advisable to hire your own public adjuster on the following cases:

1. If you do not have enough time to spare in following up with the insurance company.

2. If you have suffered partial loss in your property regardless if it is used for business or residence.

3. If the accident resulted in injury or fatality to a family member and you would want to be spared from dealing with the insurance company.

All said, you can rely on a public adjuster to facilitate your claims if you must make one against your insurer.
