Time for a New Ride?

One of my best friends has a car we call the rocket. Maybe you’ve encountered a car like this: a classic 1980’s number, unidentifiable grayish color, sizable dents, a passenger door that sometimes won’t openyou get the idea. A few weeks ago my friend decided to step it up and start shopping for a new car. If you’re in the same boat, here are a few things to remember:

1.    Know your budget. It’s easy to get tempted by a fancy ride you cant afford, but drowning in car payments is just no good. Before hitting the lots, use this free online calculator to figure out how much car you can REALLY afford.

2.    Get haggle-ready. A little wheeling and dealing is part of the car shopping process. Starting low, asking for perks, remembering tax, and not getting too attached to any particular car are a few basics to know. If you arent go

Craigslist is Our Friend

This post’s title is my mantra as I furnish my new apartment. I’ve researched everything from 8-foot-long sofas to dining place mats from the comfort of my laptop. Every morning, I can’t wait to see what the previous day’s worth of posts “hauled” in.

That said, too many posts admit that the owner bought furniture that was too big for the new place. I’m suspicious of “let my loss be your gain” posts: why didn’t they just carry a tape measure and save hundreds? Here are some of my tips so you can make sure to get a deal and not a dud:

  • Know what quality looks (and feels like): For the big-ticket items, do your research before you in person. A friend-of-a-friend hooked me up with how to choose between flat-screen TVs (plasma vs. LCD, brand names vs. generic), so now I can zip through Craigslist’s electronics section in less than 5 minutes.
  • Comparison shop online: Just because it’s on Craigslist doesn’t mean it will be fairly priced. To boost your bargaining,

Rally for Renter’s Insurance

Picture me: a renter (which I have been for years), coming back from a lovely ski trip over Christmas this year to find that we had been robbed. Laptop, gone. Gaming console, gone. TV gone. It was the worst. And I had never even thought about getting renter’s insurance. But being robbed made me realize that even though I don’t have diamonds and video equipment in my place, I have things that I can’t afford to replace (like a laptop). Now I pay $17 a month for the peace of mind. Here are a few cool things to know about renter’s insurance:

1. Your policy should insure all of the property within your apartment.
2. It may also insure items outside of your apartment, like a bike.
3. Renter’s insurance covers fire or water damage in addition to theft.
4. Most policies cover non-auto accidents that happen away from your apartment, too.
5. If you get renters insurance, you should make a detailed list of items you want insured and even video tape them. You shoul

Debt Help with an IVA

Knowing when to ask for help with a debt problem is crucial.

If you ask for debt help too early, it’s likely the problem hasn’t yet come to a head so the advice you receive could be ineffective, ask for debt help too late and chances are the real decisions will have already been made for you.

For many people, debt help will come in the shape of an IVA, or Individual Voluntary Arrangement, a solution geared to ensure the debtor has more control over his financial affairs.

An IVA is a formal debt solution for people living in the UK who are looking for an alternative to bankruptcy, for an IVA allows its applicant to avoid most of the restrictions a bankruptcy petition would impose upon them.

An IVA also offers its applicant the chance to protect their income, which bankruptcy might otherwise put at risk. Occ Full Article…

Protecting Equity with an IVA

One of the major downsides of the financial crisis, as experienced by thousands of homeowners in the UK, has been the dramatic reduction in the number of re-mortgage products available and gone now are the days of easy re-mortgaging.

The cycle is well established. For years people have built up equity in their property in one hand, whilst racking up unsecured debts in the other. They’ve then been able to restructure their borrowings and consolidate their debt into their mortgage, only for the cycle to begin again.

But now there’s a problem. Many people have built up their debts again but, as a result of changes in the market’s attitude, can’t find a mortgage provider prepared to release their equity.

Indeed, re-mortgaging has become so difficult for some that the only way left for them to access their property’s equity is to sell up, which is easier said than done in a stale housing market.

And this is where the IVA can sometimes provide a solution, for an IVA protects equity trapped in a property that would otherwise be vulnerable to creditors if they brought bankruptcy proceedings against the owner.

Personal finance advice for free food?

Liz wrote about how it pays to be a “jack of all trades” back in January, which inspired me to take on my own “off-the-wall” project: bartering personal finance for free food. Sitting in front of a real live person is much different from zooming thoughts into the blogosphere. There’s an information overload when you talk to one person: from childhood stories about money, to bank statements dug out from a file cabinet, to questions that fly out of nowhere. Over the past six months, one question that I quickly got used to was, “Well, how do you handle it?” I will write more about my lessons on this adventure in later posts.

For now, I’d like to add more details about how I accomplished this project. My goals were simple: I wanted to help my friends and have an excuse to talk about serious things, beyond the “hey, did you see the season finale of [show here] last night?” I realized that I wanted something in return and I settled for a free lunch, worth about $5-15. Even though a free
