How to build a DIY digital marketing plan

The internet is without a doubt the most exciting marketing opportunity your business will ever have.

It’s never before been possible to reach so many people with so little money or effort. The UK economy may not have emerged fully from the recession – but for those of us who invest our time and energy into smart online marketing, we have the best possible tool to beat this.

See, the real beauty of the web is the way it encourages entrepreneurial developers to fill any tiny opportunity gap they find. Every day someone somewhere around the world launches a new web concept, including new ways of talking to people who are online. Which means every day there is more and more opportunity for you to reach an audience that might buy what you sell.

Successfully exploiting these opportunities is not just about a one way conversation (i.e. “please buy this”). It’s ab

Small businesses lose out on rate relief

Many small businesses in the UK are unaware of the tax break, it has been claimed.

The Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) is available to small businesses that have a rateable value of their premises below £12,000.

However, those with a rateable value of up to £6,000 will pay no business rates until September 2012. Ratepayers will receive SBRR of 100% on properties up to £6,000 rather than the original 50% and a tampering relief from 100% to 0% will be in place for properties over £6,000 up to £12,000 in rateable value for that period.

According to accountancy firm, Mitchell Charlesworth, there is more than £400 million Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) sitting unclaimed each year. Busin

Small business confidence is at a high

Confidence among UK small businesses is at its highest level since October 2009, new research shows.

According to research carried out by workplace provider Regus, the Business Confidence Index (BCI) is at an average of 108 points, which is relatively encouraging considering the economic conditions.

The latest Business Tracker report, which published findings from over 4,000 UK businesses, found that small business confidence measured 103 in the index. Approximately 26% of small businesses said they experienced an increase in profits last year.

Despite high levels of optimism, small businesses will remain cautious in their projections for 2011. Only 27% believe the economy will advance in the latter half of the year.

Debt Debt Ceiling

Why the US must raise its debt ceiling | Kevin Gallagher

According to US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the US will have trouble paying its debts somewhere between 16 May and 2 August 2011. Geithner is thus asking Congress to raise the legal debt limit, which now stands at $14.3tn.

Growth in the US in the short and medium term is a good thing for the US economy – and the world. But when growth recovers, the US will have to raise taxes, make a structural shift towards a green economy and reduce military and other spending. But this is not the time – and holding the US bond market hostage is not the route to that inevitably necessary future.

Firms urged to show how profits are split between bonuses and investment

Companies should be forced to spell out in simple form how they use their profits, stating how much is invested back into the businesses, how much is paid in dividends to shareholders and how much is handed to staff to help investors gauge whether bonuses can be justified.

Under the proposal being developed by Robert Talbut, chief investment officer of Royal London Asset Management, companies should be required to publish three years of such information in their annual report and accounts.

A member of the independent High Pay Commission, Talbut said: “Far too much of the debate over remuneration takes place in isolation with little relation to the context of the company and its strategy.”

He hopes his idea will allow a more sophisticated debate to take place about the ability of each individual company to pay out bonuses, dividends and invest in their businesses – particularly at a time when some companies are adding to the complexity of their bonus schemes.

Talbut’s idea for a “distribution schedule” of how profits are used is intended to make it easier for shareholders to discuss company strategy with management teams. “

Small businesses more positive about 2011

UK small business confidence has increased since the end of 2010, new research suggests.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), confidence among small businesses has made a complete turnaround in 2011. The FSB’s ‘Voice of Small Business’ index measured +6.7 for Q.1. After falling every quarter of 2010, this is the first increase recorded for a while.

On the other hand, it has also been established that a balance of -6.5% of liability insurance holders had made staff redundant in the first quarter. Despite having to make a number of tough decisions, small businesses in the UK feel positive about the future ahead. Only
